The Charitable Section of COA
What is the California Vision Project?
The California Vision Project (Foundation) is a non-profit, optometric charity designed to provide low-income, working, and uninsured families throughout California with free comprehensive eye exams and low cost glasses.

Our Mission: California Vision Foundation is dedicated to preventing vision loss and enhancing eye health through public education and the provision of services to medically underserved Californians.

How does it Works?:

1).

Perspective patients are screened for eligibility by COA after they have completed an application. Applications are available on line at www.californiavision.org or by calling 800.877.5738 ext. 222

2).

Approved applicants are matched with a participating area volunteer Dr.’s based on geography.

3).

Patient and Dr. are notified, the patient then has 60 days to call and schedule an appointment.

4).

The patient receives comprehensive eye exam, frames and prescription lenses at a minimal cost of $20.00. Starting January 2010 this will change to a $10.00 application fee.

The California Vision Foundation through the California Vision Project is able to provide these services because of the generosity of participating Doctors and several companies and organizations.

Giving back is part of the culture of Vision West, Inc., One such partnership that we support is Optometry Giving Sight.

Optometry Giving Sight is the only global fundraising initiative that specifically targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error (URE).

At least 670 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye examination and a pair of glasses. This is because in many developing countries there are not enough trained eye care personnel and there is insufficient infrastructure to support these desperately needed eye care services.

Optometry Giving Sight funds the solution by supporting programs that offer not only eye exams and glasses in countries with little or no access to them, but that establish the infrastructure and human resources required for sustainable, quality vision care.

The solution to blindness and impaired vision due to refractive error is simple – provide quality primary eye care. There is no one better prepared to take on this challenge than the global Optometric community.

Optometry Giving Sight Transforms Lives in Tanzania

Dr. Mary Anne Murphy of Front Range Eye Associates in Bloomfield, CO traveled to Tanzania in early March to see how donations to Optometry Giving Sight are helping to train local eye care professionals and establish much needed vision centers for people in rural communities. While there she also participated in a mentoring program for local optometrists working in the public health sector.
Description: Dr
Murphy’s trip gave her an opportunity to see first-hand how donations to Optometry Giving Sight are helping to transform lives in Tanzania by establishing 3 new vision centers in district hospitals in the Bariadi, Morogoro and Ruvuma Districts. The program in Tanzania is implemented by the International Centre for Eyecare Education.

“I was excited to have the opportunity to see this project first hand,” said Dr. Murphy.  “I have always been highly supportive of Optometry Giving Sight’s focus on developing sustainable eye care projects and I feel truly privileged to have had the opportunity to share some of my own expertise and knowledge with the local eye care professionals working in these vision centers, “she said.

Dr. Murphy is Chair of the U.S. National Committee for Optometry Giving Sight and invites Vision West optometrists to take part in the World Sight Day Challenge that runs the entire month of October.
